Eye Candy

Posted by derfen on June 26, 2007

I’ve been jacking with the look/layout of the blog today. Not totally over the moon with any of the wordpress themes, and really not in the mood for customizing, but they way it looks right now just about tickles my fancy. Still see some quirky stuff going on with images when viewing with internet exploder, so…..erm…..you should use firefox !

Smokin’ the peace pipe.

Posted by derfen on June 22, 2007

I’ve been trying to quit smoking lately, which basically means that when i finish the last one in the pack i spend about 20 minutes proud of myself for having smoked my last cigarette ever. Then i go to the store and buy more, and the cycle continues. I quit for 3 months, about a year ago, and have a huge regret that i started again after getting over the hump of the initial withdrawal and headwrecking phase.

I am well aware that the only way to quit is to stop buying them, stop bumming them and stop smoking them. But, that doesn’t stop me from coming up with all kinds of novel & elaborate ways of quitting. Today i’m adhering to the “smoke ’til i puke” theory. I decided i’d buy a carton of cigs and chain smoke the bastards, so that by the time i’m on the last pack i’ll be so sick of smoking that i’ll never want another cigarette again. I was passing by the Indian reservation where they have the best prices on smokes around. I got a carton of these cheap local brand cigs for 12 dollars…….yes……..you read that right……TWELVE DOLLARS for a CARTON. That’s 10 packs of 20. That’s a dollar and twenty cents for a pack of smokes. That’s euro 90 cent for a box of fags. The last time i was back in Ireland, i had to pawn my son to make enough cash to give to my neighbour just so he would let me inhale his second-hand smoke once in a while.

So now i’m thinking i’m fucked. Not only is it kinda cool (to me anyway) to be buying your smokes from Apaches & Navajos, but they’re practically giving ‘em away as well.

Oh yeah. I took Liam up to a place called Cochiti today. On the way back, we stumbled upon the Tent Rock National Monument and it felt like we stepped onto the set of Lord of the Rings or something. I was kicking myself that i forgot to bring the camera, so here’s a pic i found on the net.

tentrock

From the guide the nice man gave me :

“The cone-shaped tent rock formations are the products of volcanic eruptions that occurred 6 to 7 million years ago and left pumice, ash and tuff deposits over 1,000 feet thick. Tremendous explosions from the Jemez volcanic field spewed pyroclasts (rock fragments), while searing hot gases blasted down slopes in an incandescent avalanche called a “pyroclastic flow.”

Now. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it !

I can haz be unposted plz……..No, not urs

Posted by derfen on June 21, 2007

This has been covered extensively by others, i’m just keeping the ball rolling.

In a nutshell:

Blogger Damien Mulley had his baggage misplaced by a company called Sky Handling Partners and he blogged the whole ordeal of trying to get his baggage back. Fair enough.

One morning,Damien found that someone had been spending a bit of time lurking around his blog after doing a search for “Sky Handling Partners”. That afternoon,Damien starts gettting emails confirming his signing up on various dating sites, including gay ones, with some “interesting” profiles.

Thing is, one of the confirmation emails Damien received had a log of the location of the computer from where the sign-up was made. The IP address was traced back to City Jet Handling, which just happens to be the former name of, you guessed it, Sky Handling Partners.

Damien wrote a post about this incident and subsequently got to the Digg front page.

Sky Handling Partners have got the lawyers involved and sent Damien a letter requesting that he take down the posts.

hd up ass

Damien is not taking down the posts.

Sky Handling Partners is teh gay.

Ron Paul

Posted by derfen on June 18, 2007

He may not have a hope in hell of getting the Republican nomination to run for president. He may not have the soundest ideas when it comes to the seperation of church & state.

But if you want a politician who actually believes in something and is passionate about his beliefs, rather than posturing and paying lip service to the “issues”, then Ron Paul is yer man. It says a lot about the state of this country that a man who tells the truth, who attempts to understand and uphold the constitution, and who has a keen understanding of the effects of American foreign policy is held up as some kind of crank and “radical”.

Unfortunately, i don’t think this country is ready for someone like him. I have a feeling they still fall for shit like Rudy Giulianni’s fake indignation (see clip) , instead of actually listening and thinking about the ideas being expressed.

*I have no political affiliations or preference, i just find it refreshing to listen to a politician who speaks his mind.

Santa Fe

Posted by derfen on June 6, 2007

We went to Santa Fe today. Angie needed to get her mind off the exam she’s got coming up on Friday. She needs to pass this exam to get officially Licensed by the Board of Nursing, so it’s weighing heavily on her (doesn’t matter what i say to try and de-stress her, so i’ve learned to keep my mouth shut. )

Santa Fe is about an hour’s drive Northeast of Albuquerque. Uncharacteristically for the USA, it’s a place where you get a sense of history just walking around. Although the suburbs are what you’d expect of any mid-size American town, the town centre itself and the sorrounding streets are quite different. There is a central Plaza (or sqaayer, for the people from North Tipp ) and some very narrow streets leading off from there with all sorts of little stores and restaurants crammed together (reminded me of Ireland a little coz of that) .

Hold on……wtf am i doing?…travel writing now is it ?……fuck that !…..

Here’s you some Wiki : Sante Fe

Here’s myself and Liam Swingin’ some tackie on the bandstand in the middle of the Plaza:

and here’s a funny looking rock we saw along the road…….
